How Confidence Changes Everything
How Confidence Changes Everything
I'll start with a confession. For a long stretch of my life, I was running on something that looked like confidence from the outside but was hollow underneath. I could walk into a room and shake hands and crack a joke, and inside I was bracing — waiting for someone to notice I didn't belong, didn't measure up, took up too much space.
If you know that bracing feeling, this one's for you.
### Confidence isn't a costume — and a lot of us are wearing one
There's a real difference between self-esteem and self-confidence, and most men I know have never had it explained to them. One therapist who works specifically with men described self-confidence as a kind of "visible armor — something we rely on to navigate career moves, relationships, and daily pressure." ([Denver Men's Therapy](https://denvermenstherapy.com/blog/self-esteem-vs-self-confidence/))
Armor. That landed for me, because armor is exactly what I'd built. The problem with armor is it's heavy, and it protects you from connection just as much as it protects you from criticism.
The deeper layer underneath the armor is self-image — how you actually see yourself when no one's watching. And here's something most men never say out loud: we struggle with this too. A psychologist who runs a body image research lab put it plainly, noting that many men "struggle with body image silently, due to cultural expectations of appearing self-confident." ([Psychology Today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/body-image-and-stigma-bias/202604/men-and-body-image-the-hidden-struggle)) We're told to look confident, so we hide the part of us that isn't. And that hiding is exhausting.
### Why it matters more than you think
This isn't just about feeling good. How you see yourself shapes how you move through your entire life. Research consistently links a negative self-view to weaker emotional resilience and a deeper sense of insecurity — it follows you into your relationships, your work, your willingness to even try. ([Psychology Today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/leadership-diversity-and-wellness/202411/the-power-of-self-image))
I saw it in my own life. When I felt small inside, I said no to things I wanted. I avoided the photo. I skipped the event. I let smaller men with louder voices take opportunities I was more qualified for, because somewhere in me I'd decided I hadn't earned the right to step forward.
The flip side is just as true. When confidence goes up, your whole world widens. As one resource on body image and confidence put it, people who actually accept their bodies are "more likely to be confident and enjoy life" — and that confidence makes you more willing to take smart risks, face your fears, and forgive your own mistakes. ([Beat the Streets](https://www.beatthestreets.ca/latest-news/2021/11/15/how-does-having-a-better-body-image-affect-confidence-and-vice-versa))
That's the whole game right there. Confidence isn't about thinking you're perfect. It's about no longer waiting to be perfect before you let yourself live.
### How real confidence actually gets built
Here's the part I love, because it means none of us are stuck. Confidence in men isn't something you're born with — it's built. That same men's therapy practice describes it growing "like building muscle; it grows stronger with deliberate practice and consistent effort." ([Denver Men's Therapy](https://denvermenstherapy.com/blog/self-esteem-vs-self-confidence/))
You don't fix it by waiting to feel ready. You build it by doing reps. A few of mine:
Do the thing before you feel confident, not after. The confidence comes from having done it, not from waiting around to magically feel it first.
Watch the inner voice. That harsh critic narrating your day isn't the truth — it's a habit. And like any habit, it can be retrained. Talk to yourself like you'd talk to a friend you respect.
Stop outsourcing your worth. The remark, the look, the number on the rack — you've been letting those decide how you feel about yourself. Take that power back. It was always yours.
Surround yourself with men who lift instead of cut. This is the entire reason the Society exists. You become the men you stand next to.
You don't have to become smaller to deserve confidence. You just have to stop waiting for permission to stand at your full height.
